Touring tips when traveling to Mau Son, one of the few places from which people can view snow in winter in Vietnam

With a height of more than 1.500 meters above the sea level, Mau Son is considered as the kingdom of wind and fog. More specially, when coming to Mau Son in winter, if you are lucky enough you will be able to contemplate the scene of white snow falling on antique villas from the French domination era of Vietnam or covering the top of grass, trees and paths.
The weather
Mau Son mountainous area has two main seasons. In summer, the weather is cool and pleasant, which is suitable for a relaxing holiday. In winter, there can be snow in the area, so you can choose the right time depending on your needs.
Hotels and hostels
There are many hotels and hostels here for you to choose with full facilities and reasonable prices ranging from 200,000 VND to 500,000 VND for a double room. You can also refer to some hotels and hostels we will mention below:
Huong Son hotel: The special thing when staying in this hotel is that the hotel has a canvas with metal roofing on the peak of the mountain, where there is a mark of the height of 1,160m. From here, tourists can use the binoculars to view the surrounding villages, Lang Son, Loc Binh towns, Na Duong powerhouse and mine area.
Yen Yen hostel: The hostel is designed in a style that resembles nature with 3 sides of it faces the forest and the one left face the road to the peak of the mountain.
Nine Rooms (Chin Gian) hostel: This is the hostel with the best architecture and position of Mau Son. Additionally, the hostel is built on the base of a house designed by French so the design of this hostel has both French and modern architecture styles.
Transportation
From Hanoi, you can use a car to reach Lang Son, which is the most comfortable way, and then hire a motorbike from Lang Son city to move to Mau Son or catch a taxi. Mau Son is about 30 km far to the East of Lang Son.
Tourist attractions
Camping in Mau Son: In the middle of the great view of nature, there’s nothing more than enjoying the campfire with your friends and sip some wine on Mau Son peak, which will become an unforgettable memory when visiting Lang Son.
Visiting the villages of the ethnic minorities: Mau Son mountainous area is the place where ethnic minorities such as Dao, Nung, Tay people lives. Khuoi Cap village is the long-time habitat of Dao people, which is today a community tourism site which is very popular among tourists. You can hire a local here to be your tour guide to help you explore the customs and culture of the local ethnic minorities.
Long Dau spring: This is a quite huge spring with a length of about 10 km running on the area of Mau Son and Yen Khoai ward of Loc Binh district. The riverhead of this spring is at Mau Son mountain range with a height of more than 1,000 m and the spring runs from the North to the South through the slopes and antique forests of Lap Pia village to the lowlands. Despite being swift in raining seasons, Long Dau has a calming beauty with cool and freshwater.
Visiting Phat Chi mountain: This is situated at the Southeast of Mau Son ward, Loc Binh, Lang Son. To Dao people, this is a highly spiritual site where locals come here to worship and pray for the blessings of gods. On Phat Chi mountain, you can see other mountains ranging in front of your eyes, and the limitless beautiful green fields.
Sample timetable
Day 1: Move from Hanoi to Lang Son; if you have some time to spare you can visit some tourism sites in Lang Son first. If you catch a passenger’s car from Hanoi to Lang Son, when reaching Lang Son you can catch a taxi to go directly to Mau Son. After that you can check-in in hotels, wander round the peak to take some photos and lit some campfire in the evening.
Day 2: Touring around Mau Son, visiting Dao locals on the way down the mountain in villages like Khuoi Cap, Khuoi Tang, going sightseeing by Long Dau spring and visiting Phat Chi mountain are the activities that you can try. You can go through all these places in a day and leave the mountain in the afternoon and the go back to Hanoi.
