09-Aug-2019

Pu Luong is a new tourist destination in Thanh Hoa province. If you love wild and beautiful places with marvelous terraced rice fields and mysterious primeval forests, don't miss this name.

Travel tips for backpackers when travelling to Pu Luong

When is the best time to visit Pu Luong?

Pu Luong

You should visit Pu Luong in the two most beautiful periods of the year:

- From late May to early June: Why should you go to Pu Luong at this time of the year? Because the time from May - June is the start of a new crop of rice. You can see the beautiful terraced fields wearing a new lush green coat that will certainly give you a peace of mind when standing in front of this scene. Not only is the landscape breathtaking, but Pu Luong at this time also has a quite cool and pleasant climate for tourists to come and appreciate this region at its most beauty.

- Between September and October: In addition to June, you can go to Pu Luong in September and October. These two months are the time when Pu Luong enters the season of ripe rice. All the terraced fields on the hillside will turn yellow, making Pu Luong more beautiful. This is also the time when this “hidden paradise” attracts tourists to see the rice harvest season the most.

Where to stay in Pu Luong? Inns and homestays in Pu Luong

This is a common question since Pu Luong is one of the most important tropical forests and nature reserves in Viet Nam. Travelling to Pu Luong is commonly for backpackers and there aren’t many agencies provided professional tours like JTA Tours. Therefore, inns and homestays make up the majority of accommodation options since hotels are not available in Pu Luong.

Pu Luong

Depending on your schedule, you can choose a suitable accommodation for yourself. If you depart in the morning, you can stop by Mai Chau for lunch and then go straight to Kho Muong (Pu Luong) for accomodation rental. But if you depart in the afternoon, you should take a rest in Mai Chau for one night and then go to Pu Luong early the next morning.

Inns and homestays in Pu Luong are at the same price of VND 50,000/ person/ night. Phone connection in Pu Luong is not stable, so if you can't contact the accommodation to make a reservation, don't worry, it's okay to book on site. If the homestay is fully booked, you can ask to stay with local people or stay in the cultural house or the head of the commune’s house, etc. They are all friendly and willing to let you stay.

What to eat when traveling to Pu Luong? Famous local specialities in Pu Luong

When traveling to Pu Luong, don’t forget to say goodbye to the luxurious restaurants and eateries, and prepare for basic and simple meals from your homestay. You will be treated with local dishes such as hill chicken, snail, sour and bitter bamboo shoots, sweet leaf bush soup, com lam (bamboo cooked rice), banana flower salad, grilled stream duck, roasted wild boar and Can wine (wine drunk out of a jar via wooden bamboo pipes), etc.

Popular tourist destinations in Pu Luong / Things to do when travelling to Pu Luong

- Pu Luong Nature Reserve: is the largest conservation area in the North of Vietnam. The region is blessed with many kinds of forests such as lowland forests, low mountains; forest on limestone mountains and vegetation of bamboo shoots, shrubs, etc.

Because of the diverse mountainous terrain, wildlife lovers and adventurous tourists can conquer Pu Luong peak, which sits at the height of 1,700 metres above sea level. It allows visitors to grasp a panoramic view over the poetic and vivid scenery of the valley through idyllic villages of ethnic groups and wonderful terraced rice fields which spread over the hill’s sides.

Along the way to Pu Luong mountain, visitors can also enjoy the outstanding scenery dotted with small settlements of wooden stilt houses, beautiful terraced rice fields and many lush primeval forests – where many precious and rare fauna and flora are reserved.

- Son – Ba - Muoi village: Son Ba Muoi is quite isolated from the outside, so far. This is the place where the old couples are living proof of the land and also the place where children in the village often come to have fun. The way up to this place is a bit challenging, but it is worth a visit to savour the beautiful scenery along the trip.

- Kho Muong village:  In addition to the stunning landscape, visitors can spend time exploring the caves surrounded by limestone mountains here. Kho Muong is also an ideal starting point for trekking through the four Muong villages of Pon, Thanh Cong, Cao Hong and Kit to uncover their significant cultures. Or visitors can follow the mountain trail jointing Kho Muong, Uoi and Pho Doan village to Quan village – where the stilt houses still retain its traditional marks.

- Hieu village waterfall: is a famous place when travelling to Pu Luong. To go to this waterfall, visitors must cross a suspension bridge and hike up a slope on the hill. The feeling of walking on the suspension bridge and crossing the hillside is very exciting and interesting.

- Pho Doan market: The market takes place every Thursday and Sunday. The local people not only can trade goods here, but this is also the place to exchange the culture of many ethnics. You can immerse yourself in the joyful and colorful atmosphere that you can’t find in the city. In addition, foreign tourists are especially interested in handicraft products made by locals like brocade fabrics or vegetables and insects, etc. sold in the market as well.
