Some of Hoi An’s fortune is that not only Hoi An can avoid the destruction of war, it can also hide from the urbanization from the 2000s. Consequently, the traditional architecture and unique culture here still remains intact, which makes this place become a distinctive tourist spot in the central coastal delta of Vietnam for both national and international tourists.
A friendly atmosphere for tourism
Entering Hoi An during the 3-day time of “the 13th Vietnamese - Japanese culture exchange festival 2015”, tourists can enjoy the colorful and carefully organized content of the festival, which includes the celebration of 12 years of collaboration between Vietnam and Japan, carpenter competition, sailing race between Vietnam, Japan and tourists, Japanese animation and comic exhibition, cosplay tryout, Bonsai art exchange between Vietnam and Japan,...
Especially, at Chua Bridge (also known as Japanese Bridge or Lau Vien Kieu) which is constructed by Japanese businessmen at the 17th century, there are lots of national and international tourists who come to enjoy the beauty of this bridge and follow the tour guide carefully and quietly.
Mr. Nguyen Van Son, the vice president of Hoi An People’s Committee stated that the architectural value of Hoi An ancient town is only what we can see, however, the true value of Hoi An is the ancient culture, which the tourists should definitely explore and experience.
Consequently, besides preserving and restoring the traditional architectural style of each house, the local government always encourages Hoi An people to preserve their culture for their descendants. That is their simple and friendly lifestyle which takes humanity more seriously than pure material. Their special living style is the key to their way of keeping their tourists on this ancient.
Additionally, the city continually holds celebration to introduce to tourists the history, geography and Hoi An people with lively and appealing content, which people can join depending on their mood and enthusiasm.
As a result, there are Japanese tourists like Mr. Shimabukuro’ s family, who have chosen Hoi An for their holidays for 3 years consecutively. He said that the reason is in the first year, he had been trying to find the clues for the exchange between Japanese and Vietnamese from the previous centuries. The second year he came here is because he wanted to experience the slow pace lives of the local people. The third year he came here is for the beautiful beaches full of sunshine in Cam An and Cu Lao Cham.
“That is still not enough, my family and I will come back to Hoi An when we have the chance .” Mr. Shimabukuro happily said. This is the reason why the average stay of a tourist in Hoi An is 2.33 days, which means there are few tourists who only visit Hoi An for only one time.
To preserve the clean air of this ancient town, the People’s Committee of Hoi An is currently using the ODA fund from the French government to construct a factory which handles the wastewater properly. Moreover, the city also takes advantage of the support from Japanese government to deal with the pollution at Cau Bridge, run the project of decreasing the amount of trash in the model of Naha, Japan, plant more than 20000 trees of all kinds and thousands of square meters of greenery in parks and encourage the classification of trash in the city, especially in shops and families. As you can see, wherever you enter, you can see the cute trash can with instructions in both Vietnamese and English.
The effort to keep their trademark
Hoi An’s population is about 89,000 people in which Kinh people are the majority and there are also Hoa people who have been residing here for many years. They are all connected to the history and development of Hoi An.
The vice president of Hoi An People’s Committee straightly stated that tourism, service and trade in the city were not equally developed; the city had been too serious on improving accommodation service, souvenir and food culture meanwhile the job of finding, creating and improving tourism products for tourists did not have any breakthrough and the connection and expertise are not enough.
The act of motivating investments to encourage development and promote coastal tourism potential is not meet the demands; until now there are still many important projects about tourism which have not been operated.
To preserve their trademark of tourism, Hoi An has run many programs and ideas of encouraging tourism, expand tourist spots to surrounding areas and focus on investing on traffics.
From a small poor fishing village, now Hoi An has attracted a great population of national and international tourists to visit Cam An beach, which helps local people with financial support from operating homestay service. On the other hand, many investors also try to buy or hire lands to run accommodation service which brightens Can An with new tourism services and also decreases the pressure on ancient towns.
Areas with traditional jobs are being developed in ways that create new products for tourism. Specifically, the city has succeeded in creating some new products from corn tree and algae that attracts many tourists.
This means that Hoi An ancient town is still one of the most popular tourist spots in Vietnam for many national and international tourists.
