Traveling in the winter: Things to keep in mind
06-Jan-2020
There are lots of things to prepare for a trip. Especially on a winter trip, you need even better preparation.
Most people often suppose that summer is the travel season. However, none can resist the attractiveness of winter trips: being able to put on beautiful autumn-winter clothing, enjoying the freezing weather- winter specialty, watching the first snow, making snowmen, etc are the reasons for winter lovers to expect the winter trips.
However, there are lots of things to note down when traveling in the cold season! Especially for those who do not have a lot of experience, do not forget the following tips:
1. Travel during the winter is more comfortable than in the summer
The scorching hot weather makes everybody wants to go to the beach or mountain. Meanwhile, the freezing cold weather makes people less enthusiastic about going on a trip, especially for families with young children and old people. That is why if traveling during the winter, you do not have to worry about line-cutting, rooms fully booked or overpriced. Those who take interest in solo traveling or couples who want to enjoy some privacy, winter trips will be the best choices.
2. Choose direct flights
In bad weather, fights are highly likely to be delayed; not to mention long transit time will result in you being stuck in the airport and having to find a hotel for the night.
The best solution is to choose direct flights from the start. Meanwhile, do not forget to check the weather forecast at the night before and call the airline for delay information.
3. Consider hiring the equipment
When going skiing in Europe, if you rent the skiboard and clothing at the hotel because they offer a good price, take some time to rethink this decision! The equipment is quite big and heavy; the efforts are way too much comparing to renting at the skiing area, which is just slightly more expensive. Without heavy equipment, you will enjoy your trip even more.
4. Choose the right time
Do not think that in the winter, as Vietnamese do not travel during this season very much, Europe is solitary! With the holidays like Christmas or Easter, even more people come to the center than those who come to Da Lat and Vung Tau during the Lunar New Year holiday.
5. Do not bring the gifts
Don’t get yourself in trouble with the carefully-wrapped gifts because the security officers will have to open them up to check. If you want to bring gifts, choose the small ones that do not require wrapping. The key here is the smaller, the better.
6. Protect the immune system
Whether you travel by planes, trains or cars; please remember to wash your hand frequently to avoid infection because the air on the plane has more bacteria than normal air so it is easier to get sick here. In case that they do not provide you with soap, just prepare beforehand a dry hand-wash bottle. Some medicines like ill medicine, headache medicine, cold medicine, etc are necessary. A pack of ginger tea also helps.
A few days before the trip, you should use supplementary food like vitamin C, vitamin B to strengthen the immune system. If you have time, you can have a flu shot before going.
7. Take a rest
Resting may sound strange as on a holiday, people want to travel as much as possible. Everybody tends to be busy traveling and forget to take care of themselves. If you don’t allow yourself to rest, you will be exhausted even when the trip has not ended.
To rest, choose a stop on every day of the trip. That is where you enjoy and relax to recharge energy. And don’t forget to drink water regularly (drink ion water if you have to travel around a lot). This is compulsory if you travel in the cold winter.
8. Choose the right clothing
Besides warm clothing (sweater, hoodie, etc), you must bring your hat, glove and scarf (if not, it will be easier to catch a cold). You should not wear a short skirt. It is suggested that dark color clothing can avoid dirt and help absorbing more heat for your body.
Instead of wearing sandals, wear boots or shoes. The inside should have warm material and the bottom should not be slippery.
9. Notes when choosing food
You might want to discover the local cuisine of the places you visit. However, you should choose easy-to-digest food and avoid cold food that can make you have a stomachache.
Prioritize eating warm food. A bit of chilly, garlic or black pepper not only makes the food more delicious but also increases the heat of your body. Do not eat raw or cold food.
